What must process to be part of our moral community?

John Noonan proposed Genetic Criterion, i.e you’are a person if you have human DNA. Mary Ann Warren offers Cognitive Criteria:

  1. Consciousness
  2. Reasoning
  3. Self-motivated activity
  4. Capacity to communicate
  5. Self-awareness

Or Social Criterion: whenever society recognizes you as a person, or someone cares about you.

Peter Singer proposed:

The key to personhood is sentience, the ability to feel pleasure and pain.

It focuses the being’s capacity to suffer.

Gradient theory of personhood: personhood comes in degress, and you can have more or less of it.
